Meet your guide at Brussels’ Central Station in the morning, hop aboard your air-conditioned coach and head off to the medieval town of Ghent to begin your tour. Well-known as the residence of the famous van Eyck brothers — two Early Netherlandish painters active in Bruges in the 15th century — Ghent is today widely considered among Belgium’s most charming and beautiful cities. The blend of history, culture and tradition is captivating, and Ghent makes a wonderful day trip from the Belgian capital. Follow your guide to the Castle of Gerald the Devil — a 13th-century fortress and residence of nobles and knights — and hear of its fascinating history from your guide. Discover top city attractions such as the Belfort bell tower, the intriguing Gothic and Renaissance town hall, St Nicholas’ Church and the Masons’ Guild House. Capture the city scenery on camera and feel free to ask any questions you may have on route. Continue on to Saint Bavo’s Cathedral and marvel at ‘ The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’, the van Eyck brothers’ famous painting. Wander the cobblestone streets and alleyways of the delightful Patershol district and marvel at the majestic Castle of the Counts of Flanders (Gravensteen). Soak up the atmosphere in the city’s old fish market before heading on to Friday Market Square, the site of many battles, celebrations, fetes and festivities over the centuries. When your guided city tour comes to an end, enjoy four hours of leisure time to shop for souvenirs, explore the city further, sit down to lunch (own expense), or simply sit and sip a coffee or Trappist beer at any of the city’s welcoming bars and cafés. When the time comes to leave Ghent behind, hop back aboard your coach for the journey back to Brussels where your tour will finish.
