Immediately after the war ended camps were transformed into the museum, that was in 1947. The current museum occupies an area of two extant parts of the former Nazi concentration camp – Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau. Together they hold an extensive area, where the prisoners’ barracks, the ruins of the crematoria and gas chambers, and the railway platform at Birkenau are located.
