Did you know that the spark that started the English civil war was a row between a husband and wife? Or that the same husband asked for an extra shirt on his way to execution so that his shivering from the cold might not be taken for fear? That many people consider the builder of Downing Street was a traitor or that Henry VIII secretly married Anne Boleyn in the Whitehall Palace before he was officially divorced? And people say that history is boring.
Whitehall is a thousand years old and the great buildings of London are here, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and the Westminster Abbey. Some of the events that shaped this country took place on this street and the story of how a small island kingdom became a global empire is in these stones and buildings.
