The park also has a rich cultural history with old homesteads and cattle ranches to explore and photograph. Walk on a trail built by the Civilian Conservation Corps or one that Native Americans or fur trappers might have used in the early 1800s.
Our guides will share stories of the park’s human and geological history as well as information about flora and fauna and trivia.

Mormon Row Historic District

Leaders of the Mormon church sent parties from the Salt Lake Valley to establish new communities and support their expanding population. Mormon homesteaders, who settled east of Blacktail Butte near the turn of the 19-century, clustered their farms to share labor and community, a stark contrast with the isolation typical of many western homesteads. Homesteaders established 27 homesteads in the area because of relatively fertile soil, shelter from winds by Blacktail Butte and access to the Gros Ventre River. We will visit their homesteads and learn about the history of homesteaders in the area
