The famed architect Bruce Graham was commissioned to erect this monumental project that forever changed the city’s skyline. Its construction began in 1991, for the occasion of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, but it didn’t open its doors as Hotel Arts until 1994. 

The architect had long dreamed of creating a work like this one, in which the steel structure is visible on the outside and, through the glass walls, one can observe the sea between diagonal bracings. When he finished the project, Graham said that he had no more architecture lessons left to give.

Designed by the Canadian-American Pritzker Prize-winning architect, Frank Gehry. His whose notable buildings include the Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao), Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), Dancing House aka Fred & Ginger (Prague). 

Frank Gehry placed his fish sculpture at the foot of the hotel. It is 56 metres long and 35 metres high and seems to be longing to jump into the blue waters of the Mediterranean.

The fish sculpture floats over the retail court and was designed to become a waterfront landmark. It is meant to complement and strengthen the tower and its presence, as well as to create a much stronger public space that fits beautifully with the tower/hotel functions. 

The sculpture was made from intertwining gilded stainless steel strips supported by a metal structure (the same exoskeleton as Hotel Arts). The gentle and subtle form is marked by its intense gold colour. The interplay between the sunrays and the skin creates the impression of scales, depending on the intensity of the light, and accentuates the organic form of this vast sculpture. 

While the sculpture can be seen from some distance, Gehry believes it is more successful at close range, when you are under it, in front of it, behind it, near it and seeing it in relationship to the details of the tower and the surrounding buildings.

We at Hotel Arts Barcelona joined Tesla Motors’ “Destination Charging” program. This program aims to provide hotel guests with the option to charge their vehicles while they use the facilities of the hotel or any of its restaurants.

The charging station is equipped with two high-speed chargers, capable of providing power of up to 22.08 kW, which represents a range of up to 100 km per charging hour.

This agreement between Hotel Arts Barcelona and Tesla Motors is another step toward the creation of an infrastructure for the use of electric vehicles, helping to promote a sustainable means of personal transportation.

Spanning 45 meters long and 4 meters tall, the mural unfolds a poetic dialogue between the city of Barcelona and the Mediterranean Sea. Inspired by the musical nature of a symphony, the piece intertwines visual rhythms of the Mediterranean’s depths and an architecture long inspired by nature, echoing the richness of marine biodiversity as well as the vibrant character of our city. The result is a fluid landscape where sea and city breathe in unison, each reflecting the other’s beauty.

Since 1998, Barcelona-based designer Lorena Canals has blended art, design, and sustainability with deep respect for craftsmanship. Inspired by Barcelona and the Mediterranean, she created exclusive textile headboards for Hotel Arts Barcelona. Handcrafted over 12 days in her own factory in India, each piece evokes waves, sand, and organic textures using natural cotton, recycled PET fibers, and non-toxic dyes. Every headboard is unique, bringing warmth, calm, and authenticity to the space, transforming each room into a sensory experience where beauty and purpose meet.
